Kidney transplantation- viral infections1. Clinical trials in kidney transplantation:
- Delayed graft function- mechanisms of acute renal injury and recovery in clinical kidney transplants from deceased donors with acute kidney injury. Includes analysis of pre implantation biopsies, influence of different immunosupressive regimens, recovery and graft and patient survival.
- Immunological assessment: clinical trials in anti HLA sensitized renal transplant recipients, comparing anti HLA antibodies, kidney morphology, biomarkers and therapeutical approach.
- Viral infections in renal transplant patients: mainly cytomegalovirus and poliomavirus. Screening of risk patients, immunosupressive therapy modulation, biomarkers and long term follow up. Studies analyzing effects of quinolones in polyomavirus replication.
- Chronic graft disease: clinical registry in post transplant glomerular disease (colaborative study - Tango, Harvard Medical School); effects of aldosterone inhibition in progression of allograft dysfunction and tubular and glomerular proteinuria.
- Complications in renal transplant recipients: post transplant cancer registry, effects of different insulin protocols in incidence and progression of post transplant diabetes.
2. Experimental models of renal disease
- acute kidney injury: ischemia reperfusion model in rats, with special interest in mast cells and cross talk with other cell types
- chronic model- cycloporine nephropathy in rodents, management of uric acid and renin angiotensin system to control progression of disease.
