I am interested in understanding the vibratory response of large-scale foundations and structures interacting with the soil. In our study group, we do it so through numerical modeling with finite and boundary element methods as well as with some semianalytical variational (energy) approaches. One application of this line of research is Brazil’s new particle accelerator, the Sirius Synchrotron Light Source. Nuclear powerplants and concert halls are other examples of large-scale, vibration-sensitive structures that require special modeling techniques. Because of the computational cost of these methods, we also investigate high-performance, parallel implementations on multicore graphics hardware.
