Possui graduação pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1984), mestrado pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1988) e doutorado pela Rutgers University (1994), todos na área de Física. Fez pós-doutoramento no National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, em Tallahassee, EUA (1994-1997). É professor da Universidade Estadual de Campinas desde julho de 1997, tendo-se tornado livre-docente em 2001 e professor titular em 2010. Foi Diretor Associado do IFGW/Unicamp de 2005 a 2006, coordenador de pós-graduação do IFGW/Unicamp de 2006 a 2008 e assessor da Pró-reitoria de Pesquisa da Unicamp de 2009 a 2013. Tem experiência na área de Física, com ênfase em Física da Matéria Condensada Teórica, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: sistemas eletrônicos fortemente correlacionados, sistemas desordenados, férmions pesados, magnetismo, supercondutividade, transição metal-isolante.

My areas of research are:

(1) strongly correlated electron systems, which are systems where the interactions between electrons cannot be neglected or treated only "on the average" (as is often done in weakly correlated systems. Examples are heavy fermion systems, transition metal oxides and others, which exhibit phenomena such as the Mott metal-insulator transition, the Kondo effect, magnetic behavior, etc.

(2) disordered systems, which are systems in which the number of defects of the crystalline order is so large that treating them as a small perturbation is not enough. Typical systems are strongly disordered metals, insulators or semiconductors, which exhibit phenomena such as Anderson localization, glassy behavior, etc.

I am especially interested in systems which are both disordered and strongly correlated, which are especially challenging.
